Character
Name: Stephanie Hartman
Fandom: Mirror Magic (an original magical girl story -- universe notes are here)
Age: 16
Type: Original
Canon point: Approximately halfway through her canon; she's been a magical girl just long enough to have gotten used to it, but not long enough for her to have gotten anything big done. Basically, she's going through the filler before the first mid-season plot episode.
History: As a young girl, Stephanie was incredibly weak and sickly, often to the oint of missing months of school at a time due to healthy issues. It got to the point that her parents simply took her out of school and hired a tutor so she could learn at home. Over time, Stephanie's health gradually improved and by the time she was twelve, she was able to go back to school, full time. However, her isolation lead to her finding it hard to interact with her peers and while she wasn't picked on, she never made any friends and she spent the majority of her school life desperately lonely.
Hating herself and wishing she could change, all Stephanie could do was wallow in self-pity -- until she was visited by a weird girl in oversized robes, who declared herself to be a Messenger and Stephanie to be a magical girl. Stephanie, of course, believed none of it... until a giant monster clown started rampaging through the city and she didn't really have much of a choice. Agreeing to work with Estelle to defend her world, Stephanie accepted her shard of the Glass Palace and transformed into Mirror Heart for the first time.
Since then, Stephanie and Estelle have been working together to keep the Pierrot population under control. Stephanie's work as Mirror Heart has begin to instil some confidence in herself -- but she still wishes she could make some friends...
Personality: The best way to describe Stephanie would probably be awkward. She's not really sure of how to conduct herself in social situations and often fumbles with her words or actions -- because of this, she tends to avoid getting into situations that require her to be social. She's not completely anti-social however -- far from it, in fact. Stephanie truly, desperately wants to make friends but has no idea how she's supposed to go about doing so. She has an idealized, somewhat childish view of friendship and what friends do together -- for example, she's a big fan of things like friendship bracelets, pinkie promises and a lot of other things that people tend to grow out of in grade school. In general, Stephanie views the whole idea of friendship through rose-tinted lenses, and subscribes heavily to a lot of introvert social fallacies -- friends never disagree, friends share almost all their interests and the like.
Because of this, she tends to force herself to act in ways that she thinks meets this expectation of a 'good friend' -- agreeing with stuff she doesn't believe in, forcing herself to take part in things she doesn't enjoy. She's very critical of herself, constantly worrying what people think of her, especially people whose approval she wants. She's also guilty of getting attatched to people more quickly than she should, and can be clingy as it gets if proper boundaries aren't set. To her credit, once she realizes she's crossing a line, Stephanie will pay attention to those boundries and keep to them.
As Stephanie's ideal self, Mirror Heart is everything that Stephanie wishes she could be and, given time and a bit of self-confidence, she's what Stephanie could eventually become. Hot blooded, energetic and confident, Mirror Heart is basically a shounen protagonist in a magical girl's body. Heart has an incredibly strong sense of right and wrong, valuing fairness above all else and she cannot stand to see innocent or helpless people be taken advantage of. She's brave, bold and never backs down from a challenge, often charging headfirst into situations without thinking beforehand. Even if she's severely outclassed, Heart will not stop fighting until she's physically incapable of standing up.
On the other hand, her confidence is just as dangerous as it is helpful. Heart is increadibly prideful and doesn't take well to slights -- she'll hold a grude for forever and a day if she feels like someone's bruised her ego and she's prone to big, idiotic shows of prowess to make sure everyone knows she's top dog. She likes being the center of attention, likes being on top and if someone shows they're better than her in any way -- she doesn't take it well in the slightest.
It's worth mentioning that when she transforms, Stephanie's issues don't simply disappear -- it's just that Mirror Heart has the confidence in herself to not let those things bother her, or at least, she's good at pretending they don't bother her. She also keeps a lot of Stephanie's habits -- in particular, she'll often go to adjust or push up her glasses before realizing she isn't wearing any.
Abilities: Stephanie is a magical girl, meaning that she has the power to transform into Mirror Heart, her super powered alter ego. To transform, Stephanie opens the compact she uses as her transformation device, and calls out "Magic Mirror, Show My Heart!". She is engulfed in a bright light then emerges as Mirror Heart. When transformed, the compact becomes a broach on her chest, that she uses to perform her finishing attack. Continuing the theme of her being an idealized Stephanie, Mirror Heart's main power is super strength, essentially -- her physical strength is ten times that of a normal person, making her dangerous to go against in a fight. Not only that, but she's also very physically durable and it's hard as hell to actually injure her, making her a marked opposite to Stephanie's usual weakness. Her fighting style involves a great deal of punching, kicking and even throwing her opponent around the battlefield. While she does very well up against opponents who rely on physical attacks, she does less well when forced against magical opponents.
Her finisher is a burst of magic that she reflects from the Magic Mirror. Mirror Heart makes a heart shape over the broach with her hands, causing the broach to open up and the mirror to shine. A glowing heart appears in her hands, which she holds up, aiming it towards her opponent. She calls out "Mirror Heart Reflection!" and the glowing heart becomes a massive blast of energy that she aims at her opponent.
